When Jesus got to Bethany, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days…Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

Sometimes we think we could have prevented people from dying but we can’t and we couldn’t because we are not God. Nobody knows where things would lead. We all get too preoccupied with the big and small issues of life to the point that we are not always able to give the attention we would have given people had we known they would die. So kung hindi mo napansin ang anak mo dahil kailangan mong magtrabaho, ganun ang buhay. Nangyayari yun. If we only knew. But we didn’t know We do not know. We will not know.

Ang Dios ang may hawak ng buhay ng tao. Hindi tayo. Kahit nandun ka, kahit kinausap mo, kung mangyayari, kukunin at kukunin siya. Hindi ikaw ang dahilan o hindi dahil absent ka kaya nangyari iyon. Those who like to live can’t live if God does not want them to live. And even those who want to die can’t die unless God permits them to die.

So, when a loved one passes away, we glorify God not by regret, not by self-blame, not by guilt feelings or by wallowing in what could have been or in thinking of the past. We give glory to our Creator by emerging from the experience with a bigger heart, a kinder disposition, and a warmer attitude towards others, ourselves, and even life itself.

Luke 7:14-15

Jesus went over and touched the stretcher on which the people were carrying the dead boy. They stopped and Jesus said, “Young man, get up!” The boy sat up and began to speak. Jesus then gave him back to his mother.

Marami tayong kamatayan, hindi lang yung physical. At bawat pagtatangka ng mga taong ilibing tayo ay hinaharang ng Panginoon at hinahawakan nya yung pinagpapatungan ng ating bangkay. Ilan na ang nagtaksil sa inyong boyfriend? Lima? O di lima na ang gustong maglibing sa inyo. Hinarang yun ng Panginoon kaya buhay pa kayo ngayon.

Pag naiwanan ka ni papa, parang gusto mo na ring mamatay, pero pagkatapos ng tatlong buwan, nagtataka ka kung bakit ka nagpakabaliw dahil tumino ka na uli. Kaya kung kayo’y hirap na hirap dahil iniwan kayo, lilipas din yan. The important thing is to remain alive so that you will have time to laugh and realize how much a fool you have made of yourself. Ba’t ninyo mamahalin yung hindi nagmamahal sa inyo? Inililibing na nga kayo, papayag kayong ilibing? No way, because Jesus touches our coffins and stops people from burying us.

He touches our loved ones’ coffins as well. Kayo ba yung nanay na naglilibing ng mahal sa buhay, o kayo yung anak na inililibing? In both cases, the Lord can touch your life. Pana-panahon lang yan. Kung minsan, ikaw yung inililibing, kung minsan, ikaw yung naglilibing, kung minsan naman, ikaw yung pumatay kaya may ililibing. Paiba-iba lang tayo ng role sa buhay pero iisa lang ang role ng Panginoon. Lagi siyang nakatingin, nakamatyag at gusto nya tayong tulungan.

Philippians 1:23

It is a hard choice to make. I want to die and be with Christ, because that would be much better.

Nagtatalo ang loob ni Paul. Kasi gusto pa nyang manatili dito para makapaglingkod pa. Pero higit nyang nais na makapiling si Kristo. E di hamak naman talagang mas masarap na kasama si Kristo kaysa mga Kristiano, di ba? Kasi yung mga Kristiano ang pinakamagugulong tao sa balat ng lupa. Walang ginawa kundi mag-away, magtampo, mag-intrigahan kung minsan bagama’t hindi iyon ang dapat na nangyayari.   Ipagpalagay nang masarap ang samahan ng mga Kristiano, mayroon pa ba namang dapat pag-aagam-agam kung kay Kristo ka na sasama derecho? Pero siempre hindi naman tayo hypocrite, ayaw pa naman talaga nating mag-“to die is gain.” Gusto pa rin nating mag-“to live is Christ” hanggat maaari sana. Habang nabubuhay ka, basta to live is Christ. Pag namatay ka e di to die is gain, pero saka na lang iyon. Tutal mahaba naman ang eternity, huwag nang agahan.

God has instilled in us the love for life. Kasi kung hindi natin mahal ang ating buhay at gusto nating sumakabilang buhay e di kahit siguro mapaupo ka sa kumukulong tubig hindi ka na aahon doon. Napahipo ka sa mainit na plantsa, hindi mo na aalisin yung daliri mo hanggang matunaw. Napahawak ka sa kuryente hindi ka bibitaw dahil hindi ka takot mamatay. Inilagay ng Panginoon sa atin yung konting takot sa kamatayan para i-preserve natin yung life natin. Pero kung dulo na talaga, e di dulo. Kung graduation na, magmartsa. Ngayon, kung buhay pa, huwag laging isipin ang kamatayan. Pag-abalahan at atupagin ang kasalukuyan.

I also saw all the dead people standing in front of that throne. Every one of them was there, no matter who they had once been. Several books were opened, and then the book of life was opened. The dead were judged by what those books said they had done.

Mahalaga ang ginagawa natin habang tayo ay nasa lupang katawan dahil kasali yun sa tutuusin pagka humarap tayo sa final judgment. Hindi ito dapat panakot. Dapat itong pang-engganyo dahil lahat ng magagandang ginawa natin ay nakalista doon. It will be an awarding ceremony except that some will have more awards than others. Lahat tayo ay may pananagutan, magkakaiba lang nga ang dami at laki, pero binibigyan tayong lahat ng Dios ng karapatan at tungkuling tumulong. Excellence is expected.

Kung kakanta ka sa choir, memoryahin mo yung kanta. It is unforgivable to read it from your notes habang kumakanta ka. Kung Sunday school teacher ka, Monday pa lang dapat ready na ang lesson mo para sa Linggo. Hindi yung Saturday night ka pa lang naghahanda.

Kaya kung tutuusin ang mga ginawa natin sa lupa, dapat nangunguna dun yung paglilingkod sa Dios. You want to fellowship with Jesus? Do the work of the church because Jesus is the head of the church. And everyone that serves in the church is serving side by side with Jesus who is continuously heading this church. He might be invisible and inaudible at times, but whenever you work for the furtherance of God’s kingdom, you are working side by side with Jesus. Yung katrabaho natin si Hesus is the best way to fellowship with him.

Finally, I said to myself, “Being wise got me nowhere! The same thing will happen to me that happens to fools. Nothing makes sense. Wise or foolish, we all die and are soon forgotten.”

Fools, like the wise and the famous, will be overtaken by death. No matter how much you have been celebrated in life, you will also be forgotten. The pharaohs even built pyramids to immortalize themselves and yet how many of us know them? Great men and women who marched through history had monuments built, accomplished a lot and conquered empires, and yet how much do we really know about them? Another generation remembers you only for the tail end of your career.

Ano ang mahalaga? Ang maalala ka ng Dios. Pag ang tao ay nag-aagaw-buhay na, doon lang lalabas kung ano ang mahalaga. Wala namang namamatay na hinahanap ang mga trophies at awards, o mga titulo ng lupa, o mga recognition ng kanyang accomplishments.

You don’t have to be king or to have royal blood or to be a star. You can eat and drink, and if you find happiness in it, enjoy it because it’s available to so many people. Find satisfaction in your work, but don’t necessarily depend only on affirmation, acceptance, or palakpak ng iba para ka sumaya. Ang mahalaga, kahit nag-iisa ka, nananalamin ka, ay masaya ka sa ginagawa mo dahil alam mong may katuturan. Enjoy the simple pleasures of each day. Celebrate life and its ordinariness.
