Psalm 77: 2

In days filled with trouble, I search for you. And at night I tirelessly lift my hands in prayer, refusing comfort.

Pain speaks to us in ways that ease cannot. It makes us remember what pleasure forgets. Yung maliit nating daliri na lagi nating nai-ignore-ignore, pag yan ang sumakit biglang conscious ka. “Ay! May maliit na daliri pala ako.” You become conscious of the parts of your body you had never known existed or you never appreciated. Kung bakit naman kapag may sugat ka, laging yun ang nababangga. Kapag tayo ay nasugatan at nasaktan, we become more conscious of other people who are also wounded.

Pain gives wisdom because it isolates us so we can think more clearly. Kung lagi kang connected at naliligiran ng mga tao, hindi ka nakakapag-isip nang mabuti. It also points us to God. Kasi kung may karamdaman ka at nag-iisa, aloneness forces us to be with God. Dun tayo nagkakaroon ng oras para makipagniig, makipag-usap, at umasa sa kanya. Kaya sa gitna ng mga dinaramdam at kahinaan natin, naaalala natin ang Dios.

When pain speaks to us, we must listen. Let your pain speak to you about you. Bakit ganito ang nararamdaman ko? Bakit sumakit ang dibdib ko? Ano ang mga mali kong ginagawa? Ano ang puede ko pang itama sa darating na panahon? Ano’ng personality ba mayroon ako? Bakit lagi na lamang akong ninenerbyos? Nagkukulang ba ako ng pagtitiwala sa Dios? Let your pain speak to you because it has a message.

Make your tents larger! Spread out the tent pegs; fasten them firmly.

Though the Lord has commanded man to multiply physically, it is also very important that we multiply essentially. We must magnify the essence and the spirit of life by multiplying in terms of fruit and production, work and meaning. Habang lumalawig ang buhay, dapat tayo lalong nagkakaroon ng halaga, maraming napo-produce, natututuhan at naituturo. Kaya lang ang mga tao minsan ay tumatanda nang paatras. May makikita kang kakilala, wala nang ibang topic kundi asawa nya. Napakalimited ng repertoire ng topic na alam pag-usapan: ang asawa nya, ang apo nya, at ang kanyang mataas na blood sugar. Kailangan naman na pinapalaki ang mundo at ang mga performances natin para mag-enjoy at makinabang, hindi lang tayo, kundi ang ibang tao rin.

Kung hanggang ngayon hindi nyo pa rin ma-spell nang tama ang Mississippi at nalilito pa rin sa agreement between subject and predicate, may problema kayo sa buhay. Insecure pa rin ba tayo sa pronunciation ng mga French menu sa restaurant? Hindi ka pa rin natututong lumangoy after twenty years? Bakit hindi pag-aralan? Maraming mga Kristiano hanggang ngayon, ang akala nila relo si Titus, at ang Sodom at Gomorrah ay lovers na kagaya nina Romeo at Juliet.

Napakalaking pandaraya ang ginagawa natin sa buhay kung hindi tayo umaasenso. Hindi tayo dapat patuloy na magkubli doon sa mga bagay na hindi natin magawa. Kailangang nag-aaral at pinalalaki ang utak. Dito nakasalalay ang pagyabong, pamumulaklak, at pamumunga ng buhay ng tao.

Acts 14:8-10

In Lystra there was a man who had been born with crippled feet and had never been able to walk. The man was listening to Paul speak, when Paul saw that he had faith in Jesus and could be healed. So he looked straight at the man and shouted, “Stand up!” The man jumped up and started walking around.

Nagkatinginan lang sila. Habang nagsasalita si Paul, may isang lumpong nakatitig sa kanya nang may pananalig. Nakita siya ni Paul at sinabi nya, “Nananalig ka. Maglakad ka.” At nakalakad yung tao. Hindi ka lang titingin at mag-uusyoso kung ano ang itsura. Pakikiramdaman mo kung ano yung ikino-communicate nya. The disciples of the Lord were empowered by the power and spirit of Jesus to touch through words, their hands, even just the eyes. We can touch people through media, the cellphone, e-mail, or gifts.

But very importantly, let people touch you. Huwag kayong maglagay ng mga walls. Katulad, halimbawa, ng pagsuot ng kadilim-dilim na sunglasses. Unless ayaw mo lang masilaw ng araw at nagpapa-cute ka lang, you’re actually saying, “I don’t like to look at you, I don’t want you to see me looking at you, and I don’t want you to look into my eyes.” Umiiwas tayong makipagtinginan.

We should learn to touch and be touched in a way that is not improper and that will promote Christian love and friendship. The Lord was forever touching people and was also being touched. We were created by God needing and wanting to reach out, and be touched. When that cannot happen visibly, it has to happen another way. Build bridges, not walls.

Proverbs 3:21

My child, use common sense and sound judgment! Always keep them in mind.

The presumption here is that we know the difference between good and bad. Seldom are we going to be surprised na “Ay, yun pala ang tama at ito ang mali!” Most of the time we really know what is good and what is bad; we just neglect sound judgment. Minsan sinasadya nating maging reckless, padalus-dalos at careless.

Sino ba ang madalas na maligaw? Hindi ba yung mga hindi marunong mag-preserve ng sound judgment and who surround themselves with people who insist on making them do the wrong things? Evil company ruins morals. Kadalasan kahit alam na alam na natin kung ano ang tama, pag lagi tayong nakakarinig ng kabilang opinyon, nababaluktot rin ang ating pananaw. Nagiging manhid tayo sa tama at nagagawa natin ang mali. We need to be refreshed on what is right.

Dapat tayong nakikipag-usap at nakikibarkada sa mga tama ang takbo ng utak. Dapat na pinipili natin kung sino ang sinasamahan. Dapat bantayan din natin ang sarili sa mga pinanonood na mga pelikula, sa mga binabasang literature na masyadong post-modern ang approach, kasi madami sa mga modernong pag-iisip ang nag-aadvertise that crime pays. Ang mga ending ng mga fiction ngayon, bad people are having a field day!

Kaya dapat tayo laging nag-iingat in order to preserve our better judgment. Fight for it if we must because the world system will want it taken away from us.

Psalm 121:1-2

I look to the hills! Where will I find help? It will come from the LORD, who created the heavens and the earth.

To “look up to the hills” is really a figure of speech. Many people lift up their eyes to the clouds or to look at the rain. Some people can even remember God by looking into a microscope. Dapat mayroon kang ganung ritwal sa buhay. Tuwing nakakakita ng maraming pagkain, naalala mo ang Dios. Mayroon naman na tuwing kikilos siya at malusog, naaalala rin nya ang Dios dahil naikukumpara nya noong siya ay halos malumpo at hindi makalakad. Ano’ng nagpapaalala sa atin sa Dios? What do we do to physically and symbolically remember God?

Sometimes feelings of inadequacy and failure, even ill health or danger, are just reminders from God that we are forgetting him. Ipanalangin natin na hindi na natin kailangan ng mga dramatic reminders from God para lang tayo magbalik-loob sa kanya, Talaga namang 99.99% ng taong nagigipit, nagkakasakit at nagkakaproblema ay biglang nagiging maka-Dios muli. Biglang nagbubuklat uli ng mga inaanay na Biblia. Biglang umaattend ulit ng mga religious services na matagal na nyang di sinisipot.

Kaya pag down and out, isa ring dapat nating isipin na baka paalala ito ng Dios na sobra na tayong nagiging mayabang, makasarili, at iniaasa na natin ang ating kaligayahan at ang ikabubuti ng buhay natin sa kapwa tao lamang.
