You treat me to a feast, while my enemies watch. You honor me as your guest, and you fill my cup until it overflows.  

Eastern etiquette ang nilalarawan ng verse na ito. Noong araw sa Israel, nakatira ang mga desert dwellers sa mga tent. Pag may bisita, sumasalo sila sa labas ng tent para presko. Kung minsan nilalatag lang nila doon sa carpet ang kakainin nila kaya kitang-kita ng ibang desert dwellers na may bisita.

Ang ibig sabihin nun, pag pinakain ka at sumalo ka, walang puedeng gumalaw sa iyo sa lugar na iyon na hindi muna dadaan sa iyong host at willing siyang ibigay maging ang kanyang buhay to protect you from your enemies. At ganun ang ginawa ng Panginoong Hesus. Namatay siya para sa atin kaya hindi na tayo puedeng patayin ng kalaban. Sinasabi ng Panginoon, “Pag pinapasok mo ako sa iyong puso, magiging shepherd mo ako. Ako na muna ang mamamatay bago ko payagang may mangyaring masama sa iyo.”

Sa init ng disyerto na halos ikabiyak ng ulo sa init at ikabitak-bitak ng anit, pag dumating ang isang bisita, binubuhusan siya ng konting langis sa ulo para ma-refresh. So bukod sa binibigyan tayo ng dangal dahil binubuhusan nya tayo ng langis, umaapaw din ang inumin na inaalok. There’s always hunger and poverty in that region, so pinapakita sa atin na ang binibigay nya ay sobra-sobra. Hindi tayo pinagdadamutan. Ganyan magbigay ang Dios.

Protection from enemies, more than enough provision, and refreshment for life’s journey. That’s what Jesus will do for you when He becomes your Shepherd.

But Jesus told him, “I have spoken freely in front of everyone…. I have not said anything in secret.”

How do we go to the point as to not have fears? Have no dark or dirty secrets. Malaking takot ang ibinibigay ng mga sikreto natin, lalo yung mga sikretong marurumi at madidilim. Mga krimen na nagawa, mga pagkukulang, mga pagtataksil, pandaraya, pagnanakaw. You create even your own shadows. At ang mga taong may mga malalaki at maruruming lihim ay maraming takot sa buhay.

Mas maraming sikreto ang tao, mas maraming dapat itago at ikatakot na mabunyag. So, don’t be blackmailable. Ang naba-blackmail lang naman yung mayroong malaking lihim e, na sa takot nyang mabunyag ay babayaran nya ng anuman, susuhulan nya, tatakpan nya ang bibig ng sinumang gustong magbunyag sa kanya. Blackmail draws strength from people’s secrets and fears of being found out. Kahit pa yan ay political, social or emotional blackmail.

Lalabas at lalabas ang totoo, mabubunyag at mabubunyag ang katotohanan. So no fear means no deception. Gusto mong mabuhay nang malaya sa takot? Huwag kang mandaya. Huwag kang magnakaw. Huwag kang mang-umit. Huwag kang manlinlang. Dapat totoo ka, hindi ka fake.

Set yourselves free from falsehood and ignorance, hiding, needless suffering, and fear itself. Kung mayroon kayong dapat ipagtapat, ipagtapat nyo na para matapos na ang inyong pagdadala. You will have momentary discomforts, kahihiyan, pag-uusig, pagbabayad pero ang tunay na bunga nito ay ang inyong kalayaan. Kahit hindi kayo nagbabayad o nagmumulta, mas malaki pa ang ibinabayad nyo sa pagtatago ng isang sikretong nagpapahirap ng inyong loob, lumilimita sa inyo, at naggagapos sa inyong buhay.

Psalm 23:4 (NIV)

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Isang talinghaga ang paggamit ng salitang “death” o kamatayan sa salmong ito. The phrase “shadow of death” does not really mean physical death or death as we know it.  It can mean calamity. Kaya ang sinasabi ay kahit ano’ng kalamidad ang aking suungin, harapin o lusungin ay wala akong magiging pangamba.  Evil here also does not always mean evil spirits or evil deeds. It can also mean adversity or distress or grief or misery or sorrow.  Sinasabi ng may akda, “Sapagkat ang Dios ang aking pastol, ano man ang suungin ko, ano man ang mangyari, wala akong ipangangamba.”  Kung minsan tayo ay nadadayang mag-isip na nakakatakot mawalan ng ganito’t ganun.  Pero walang dahilan para ang tao ay mangamba kung ang Panginoon ay nasa kanyang puso.

When the Lord is my shepherd, I will be secure no matter what.  Sa totoo lang, ang kalungkutan natin kapag may mahal tayong sumasakabilang buhay ay dahil, una, mahal natin ang namatay, mami-miss natin siya at mahihirapan tayo.  Pero madalas ding nadadagdagan ito ng pangambang “Paano na ako?  Paano na ang inaasahan ko?” Lalo pa’t nasasandalan natin ang yumao. Kaya nga dapat nating alalahanin na ang tunay na nasasandalan ng tao ay ang ating Dios.  Hindi natin minamaliit o binabale-wala ang magagandang ginawa ng taong sumakabilang buhay subalit dapat lang maalala ang katotohanan na ang Dios naman talaga ang pinanggagalingan ng lahat ng mabubuting bagay.  Sapat na ito para makaaliw sa atin.

Jeremiah 17:9 (NIV)

The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

Ang pinag-uusapan kaya dito ay yung aorta, yung may kung anu-anong mga chambers, o yun kayang literal na puso na ginagawa nating bopis? Of course not. The heart here is the symbol of one’s personality and personhood. It is beyond cure.  Even what we call love can be very selfish. “I miss you, so come here, because when you’re here, I’m happy.” Para ma-satisfy yung gusto natin, sasabihin natin , “I love you.” It is so easy to use people that we love for our own selfish ends. Even the very noble institution of love could be so easily corrupted pag hindi natin binantayan. If we follow our heart all the time, alam nyo kung saan tayo pupunta? Kapahamakan. Gaano karaming tao ang sa pagsunod sa puso at damdamin ay napahamak? Kaya isa yan sa mga bagay na dapat kino-control. Hindi yan laging pinagbibigyan.

Sa lipunan, mahalaga ang suppression rather than the expression of man’s primal nature.  Kapag kaya nating timpiin ang ating galit, sibilisado tayo.  Yung kahit na gustung-gusto natin yung dumadaan, pasulyap-sulyap lang tayo at hindi natin tinititigan.  Kapag kaya nating supilin yung likas at natural, naipapakita natin ang pagiging sibilisado. 

Hindi laging sinusunod ang puso.  Hindi lahat ng nadarama ay pinagbibigyan.  At lalo namang hindi laging pinaiiral kung ano ang ibig ng puso.

Your kindness and love will always be with me each day of my life, and I will live forever in your house, LORD.

Nakakatiyak tayo na dahil kilala natin ang ating shepherd, makakapiling natin ang Dios Ama magpakailanman. We may not always be good, but God’s goodness will always be with us because he’s our shepherd. We may not always be loving but God will keep on loving us. So we feel secure. But we are not only recipients of God’s love and goodness, we ought to be dispensers and channels of goodness and love to others.

Bakit nga ba tayo hindi magiging loving and good kung secure naman tayo sa Panginoon? Bakit tayo magiging madamot kung alam nating magbibigay ang Panginoon sa atin? At kung nagbigay tayo sa tamang paraan at sa mas higit na nangangailangan, alam nating papalitan ito ng Panginoon. So goodness and love will follow us everywhere we go because we know who we are.

Kaya lang naman tayo minsan nagiging mabangis kasi natatakot tayong maubusan. Pero kung mawala na yung takot na iyon, mapagbigay na dapat tayo. Wala nang dahilan yung nananalig sa Panginoon at nakakatiyak ng buhay na walang hanggan at nakakatanggap ng mga blessing sa buhay na ito, para maging maramot o masungit. Walang dahilan para hindi maging katulad ng ating shepherd. Walang mas mataas na pagtanaw ng utang na loob sa ating shepherd kundi sa maging munting shepherd din sa iba. Ang pinakamabisang pagpapasalamat sa Panginoon ay yung ibahagi rin natin sa iba yung tinatanggap natin sa kanya.

Ecclesiastes 7:2
It’s better to go to a funeral than to attend a feast; funerals remind us that we all must die.

Sabi ni Solomon, kung pipili kayo sa party dito at lamay doon, doon kayo sa lamay. Ano’ng ibig sabihin nun? Pag nagpupunta ka sa patay, naaalala mong mamamatay ka rin. Iyun ang dapat na napala mo. At pag naalala mong mamamatay ka rin, naaalala mo kung paano ka dapat mabuhay. Pinapahiram ka pa ng konting sandali para samantalahin at lasapin natin ang buhay habang hindi pa nagpapantay ang ating mga paa. Naalala nating pag-isipan ang kahulugan ng buhay, suriin ang sariling buhay at maghanda sa hindi naman maiiwasang appointment na yan.

Ang buhay ay umaabot ng pitumpung taon. Kung sobra kang malakas, baka umabot ka pa ng 80. Pag naka-90 ka pa, sobra-sobra na. Yun ngang iba, 10 years old pa lang namamatay na. Tingnan nyo ang balut, hindi na nagkaroon ng pagkakataong mabuhay, di ba? Hindi pa nga isinisilang e sumakabilang buhay na. Kanya-kanyang panahon. Pag nagkaroon tayo ng dagdag na oras, ipagpasalamat natin, “Salamat, buhay pa ako.” Hindi dapat puro reklamo.

Mayroon naman talagang tinatawag na, e ayaw pa. Siguro mayroon pang mga karanasang hindi pa natikman o mga kabutihang hindi pa nagawa. Kaya nga dapat na nabubuhay tayo araw-araw. Paborito nating sinasabi yung, “Mabuhay!” Kaya dapat na binubuhay natin ang sarili. Pag nalulungkot, humanap ng saya. Umimbento ng kaligayahan kaysa magmukmok. Lasapin ang sarap ng buhay at magmartsa nang mainam kung ga-graduate na.

Proverbs 3:11-12

My child, don’t turn away or become bitter when the LORD corrects you. The LORD corrects everyone he loves, just as parents correct their favorite child.

To have a good, godly life, we must not resent or reject godly correction. Kahit na minsan, inaadhika nating maging laging tama, pero kung sakali mang nasilat at nakagawa ng mga pagkakamali, huwag nating tanggihan, kainisan o layuan yung nagtutuwid at yung pagtutuwid sa atin. Never reject godly restriction or justice. Huwag sasama ang loob kung itinutuwid, kung nawawalan ng premyo at napaparusahan pa. Kung ang mga pagkakamali ay naprepremyuhan, mawiwili tayo sa paggawa ng mali at mapapalayo tayo sa paggawa ng tama. Discipline dictates that good behavior is rewarded and bad behavior is punished.

Kung minsan alam na alam na natin that if we get into a wrong relationship, halimbawa, hindi nagki-click yan. Pero nag-iinsist pa rin tayo. Kapag hindi nag-flourish, hirap na hirap tayo, sumasama ang loob natin, nasasaktan tayo, at nagtatampo tayo sa Dios. Dapat nga ipagpasalamat pa natin that we are being corrected. We do not know what horrible situations could befall us if we insisted on taking the wrong turn.

Huwag tayong nagtatampo sa Dios. Kadalasan kapag mayroon tayong mga bagay na hinihiling at hindi natatanggap mula sa Dios, nagtatampo tayo. Isipin na lang natin na itinutuwid siguro tayo ng Dios. Puede ba tayong lumaban sa Dios? Magtatagumpay ba tayo kung magtatampo sa Dios? Dapat nating tanggapin nang maluwag sa dibdib kung tayo ay itinutuwid.
